Mike Cassella with 315 Foodies stopped by the Cafe at Stone Mill on Friday morning as part of his all-day ‘health cruise’, and it gave us the chance to get an update on their attempt to win the Guinness World Record for the longest Charcuterie.
In case you don’t know, Charcuterie (pronounced “shahr-ku-tuh-ree”) is the art of preparing and assembling cured meats and other meat products. But, many people use the term charcuterie to refer to an assortment of meats that are paired with different accompaniments, such as toast, fruit, cheese, and sauces.
He stated, “We’ve settled on September 26, 2021 for the new date, and it should run from 11 am until 7 pm. We’ve been informally planning until just now, taking forms from people who want to be involved.”
They are finding business who want to build part of the board and they’ll let them set up their own tables, hand out literature and more.
“We’re starting to add the expenses up for this and we’re finding out it’s a really big deal. Tents, tables, porta-potties, silverware. Guinness alone is $15-18,000 to get them to show up,” he said.
Cassella said they are planning on having 3-4 bands at the event, as well as a contest to give away a car. They’re also hoping to land some big-name sponsors for the festival as well.
Breweries and wineries are on their list of potential vendors for the event. “There are a couple of wineries that I’m connected to on social media, so we’re going to contact them to see if they are interested.”
Cassella said that they are still waiting for full guidance from the state on what the rules and regulations might be for the September festival, as they anticipate large crowds.
“We have a lot of interest in the event at the moment, but we’re looking at other festivals that bring in four or five thousand and we think we could surpass that. Especially with a couple of good regional bands that we’re talking to and a celebrity chef,” he stated.
“In addition to the record we’re trying to get, we’re really trying to put a spotlight on the area. We’re really trying to make this into a festival,” Cassella said.
As for Cassella’s ‘health cruise’? He felt like he had to clear his head after many of the mask restrictions had been lifted, so he planned Friday as a day of eating, drinking, and visiting, starting in Little Falls.
His itinerary was lengthy and went something like this:
- First stop is the Cafe at Stone Mill in Little Falls for some great coffee – 9am.
- Then Doms Deli in Herkimer. I hear they make “2 on a roll” like Chet’s used to do. 9:30-10:30.
- Pitstop at my Ma’s to use her bathroom – 10:35.
- Utica Coffee at 11:15 for another great coffee and maybe a chocolate crossant.
- Alamo in Poland for one of their AMAZING looking Bloody Marys.12-1:30 ish.
- One Genny in New Hartford at 2. I hear they have nice cocktails and appetizers.
- Meiers Creek Brewery in Cazenovia – 5ish. Right on the lake, looks cool.
- This one I’m REALLY excited about. Ginos in Fayetteville for their beautiful looking Reuben. I am a reuben lover! That’s at 7pm.
- Then I plan to fancy myself up and hit The York in Syracuse around 9 for a night cap.
Cassella said, “All times subject to change depending on how many Bloody Marys I have at lunch. There’s a chance I just end my trip then and there and go sleep at the Diamond Mines campground.”
