Nearly 200 volunteers donated their time and talents to Arc Herkimer in 2018. From volunteering in classrooms and other programs to assisting at the nonprofit’s major fund raisers, including the New York International Wine Auction, they all helped to empower and enrich the lives of individuals with disabilities and others in the community.
In November, volunteers were recognized at an evening event at Francesca’s in Ilion. Two individuals were also honored as 2018 Volunteers of the Year.
Teri Smith, of Ilion, was named Volunteer of the Year for her work with the Spirituality Committee and events held throughout the year. Smith serves as an Arc Herkimer Clinical Services Specialist.
Tammy Helmer-Bergen, Guardianship and Spirituality programs coordinator, said, “Teri exhibits the quality of love in all areas of her life. The care and concern she has for the individuals we support and the people she works with are evident in her words of encouragement and the little things she does to make people feel special. This carries over into her volunteerism. When she heads-up a coffeehouse or helps at a retreat or the Celebration of the Spirit concert, the happiness and comfort of those around her are of the utmost importance to her. She pitches in wherever she is needed, and she is happy to do so.”
Chris Anderson, of Little Falls, was also named Volunteer of the Year, for his support of special events and fundraising at the nonprofit. Tony Visconti, executive vice president – Business Operations/CFO, said, “Chris is so generous to our community, from hosting movie nights for individuals supported by Arc Herkimer, providing movie passes that are raffled to our staff, hosting movie nights at the theatre for other civic groups, and much more. For several years he has assisted with our golf tournament, taking on the role of Golf Committee Chair this year. Through his leadership, he brought in new sponsors and golfers, and the 2018 tournament was the highest grossing golf event in our history. Through his work, volunteerism, and interactions with the individuals we support, it is evident that he puts the person before the disability.”
