HERKIMER, NY — On September 11, 2025, Assemblyman Robert Smullen hosted the third annual Women of Distinction Awards at his Herkimer office, celebrating the contributions of remarkable women across his expansive 4,000-square-mile district, which spans parts of Herkimer, Oneida, Montgomery, Fulton, Hamilton, and Otsego counties.
The ceremony highlighted the strength and spirit of the Mohawk Valley and western Adirondacks communities.
In his opening remarks, Smullen expressed gratitude to attendees and emphasized the importance of recognizing local heroes. “This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite things to do in the State Assembly,” he said, noting the size of his district, which he described as “bigger than all of New York City and Long Island combined.”
He praised the region’s residents, calling them “good, honest, warm-hearted folks that do the right thing.”
Reflecting on the state of civil society, Smullen voiced concern about growing incivility but underscored his commitment to fostering kindness and generosity. “I worry that our civil society is becoming uncivil. I choose to do the opposite, which is to make it more civil, to make it more kind and generous,” he stated.
He connected this mission to the awards, describing them as “a neat way to highlight what people do all around in civil society.”
Smullen also shared personal anecdotes, mentioning his 90-year-old father, a volunteer fireman for 70 years, who lived through significant historical moments like Pearl Harbor and Victory in Japan Day.
Drawing inspiration from such longevity and service, Smullen expressed optimism about the future. “I’ve never been more optimistic about New York and America and everything that I am right now,” he said, despite acknowledging the challenges of political rhetoric.
The assemblyman concluded by emphasizing the honor of representing his constituents and recognizing the award recipients. “It is my thing to be able to honor you,” he told the nominees, expressing reluctance to embarrass them but eagerness to celebrate their contributions.
The Women of Distinction Awards continue to serve as a platform to celebrate the dedication and impact of women in Smullen’s district, reinforcing the values of community and service that he holds dear.
