In keeping with our tradition of donating a book to the County’s elementary or high schools in recognition of Black History Month (e.g. Born on the Water; Little Leaders; Black Heroes), The Herkimer County Hunger Coalition has chosen “Madam C.J. Walker Builds A Business” by Rebel Girls and Denene Millner. It’s the true story of the first free woman in her family starting a business from scratch and ultimately becoming the country’s first self-made millionaire.
The book is intended for readers in grades 3 through 7, and its message is pertinent to all, irrespective of race, creed or color. One should never short change a dream. If you’re willing to make sacrifices, work hard and never give up hope, that dream can come true.
This year’s donation is especially poignant given the new government’s threat of doing away with Black History Month. By introducing our children to the contributions of our minorities, we’re guaranteeing that they learn the true American history, not a facsimile thereof.
