Little Falls Elks Lodge #42 BPOE
On May 18, it was announced that The City of Little Falls Canal Days Festival would be canceled for 2020. As we all approach the opening of the state, we understand and support the planning committee’s decision to call off the event. The committee does a fine job and we are sure the decision was a hard one to make.
I have been Chair of the Elks Canal Days efforts for over 25 years. The BPO Elks at Little Falls has a wonderful facility with a great porch and lawn that we use to provide live entertainment, outdoor activities beer, and food sales. Our Chicken and Rib BBQ have been a favorite for years. One thing we will miss is the great comments that our events are the highlight of their summer visit to Little Falls. Canal Days at the Little Falls Elks has been very popular with the attendees. We budget a profit each year to cover some of our lodge expenses – like our $6,600 in property taxes, building insurance, and utilities.
We also depend on the fundraiser to support our Elks charities. Our local lodge supports many youth programs like Little League, Babe Ruth, American Legion Baseball, Pop Warner, Girls Softball, Boy Scouts, Drug Awareness, Veterans, Cerebral Palsy, and scholarships for our local students. Losing this event along with the many, others will drastically affect our ability to support our mission.
The Elks is not alone. As our society changes, Benevolent, Social, and Veterans clubs are all struggling to survive, as our younger generation is not a “Joining” group. This Pandemic will take its toll on all of us. We hope all our local Not-for-Profit organizations come out of this above water. I am a member and support our local volunteer organizations. We all appreciate the public supporting our fundraisers and we will all struggle to overcome the income loss.
