Common Ground in Herkimer County

I want to thank the voters in Ilion who were courteous and generous with their time on a recent beautiful Sunday afternoon when my two kids and I knocked on their doors to talk about the upcoming election. I am a Democrat and was volunteering for Matt Castelli for Congress, who came to Little Falls to thank us volunteers as well as to listen to the concerns of local voters himself.

I spoke with people of all ages who are registered Republicans, Independents, and Conservatives as well as unaffiliated voters. I shared my experience of previously voting for Anthony Brindisi; many of them did as well. I said what I liked about Anthony was that he always shook my hand and treated me with respect. Matt treats me the same way–firm handshake, a smile, and listening to what’s important to me. And just like Brindisi, Matt was very friendly to my kids who like to give high fives. This common courtesy resonated with the people of Ilion.

I was ecstatic that everyone was planning to vote on November 8th, and appreciated their honesty when I heard they weren’t sure who to send to Congress quite yet. Everyone was happy that this election with all the ads and mailers is almost over–so am I! I was happy to share that Matt Castelli is running on the Moderate Party ballot line, which is helpful to many voters, since the Independence Party line doesn’t exist any longer. People thanked me for providing redistricting updates because it has certainly been a confusing year.

What was most meaningful for me was our conversations about what really matters most to each of us, and we found common ground with our families, communities, and freedom to shape a better future, especially for our children. I hope that our positive and friendly conversations at their door steps was helpful and left a lasting impression of how important their vote is on November 8th.
