The Main Street First Community Picnic is happening this weekend, on Sunday, September 22nd from 3-7 pm at Moreland Park.

According to Main Street First member Rob Richard “I think this is the fifth year for the Community Picnic and Main Street First originally started it as a way to actually welcome people who were new to the community. It was a chance for them to find new neighbors so that they could get connected with other people in the community.”

The group also felt that it was a way for new people to meet people who were already connected and doing things within the community, allowing them to hear about some of the things that were going on and to become excited and involved in those things.

“We later kind of dropped the newcomer thing and tried to make it a community picnic where anybody could go. New people, long-time residents, it doesn’t matter. We really see it as a community bonding experience and a way for people who already know each other to catch up, but also to make new connections and make the community stronger,” stated Richard.

Another goal is to show off Moreland Park, which the group thinks is one of the hidden gems in the City. “A lot of people don’t know it’s here, including people who have lived here for a while because it’s tucked away on the hill. But, it’s a beautiful place, so we like to help people get exposed to the park and know that it’s there,” he said.

There is going to be live music at the event provided by Oscar Stivala and friends from 4-6 pm and games for families and kids. Richard said, “If you’re going, we ask that you bring one dish to pass and if you want something to drink, you should bring your own. It’s ok to bring alcohol if you’re over 21.”

Main Street First will be providing hamburgers and hotdogs at no charge.

Rock City Development, LLC is sponsoring the live music.  If you’d like to register to share a dish, you can find the information on Google Docs.
