LITTLE FALLS, NY – The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs only allowed five Amsterdam hits on Thursday night and that was enough to hand the Mohawks their first loss, 8-3.
After walking Luke Filippi in with the bases loaded, Mohawk Valley starter Walter Garrett (Trinity) grabbed two quick outs with the bases loaded to keep the damage in the first to just one run.
The Diamond Dawgs tied it up in the second on a dying-duck ball by John Ramsey (Trinity), scoring Kaden Hart (Virginia Tech) from third base easily.
Three straight errors by Mohawk Valley with two outs in the fourth allowed another run to come in on the legs of Bray Touchstone (Gulf Coast CC). Matt Sutera (Wagner) would not allow that three-error inning to slide, however, slamming a ball to right field and scoring Ian Oehlschlaeger (RPI) and Brandon Hauk (St. Thomas Aquinas). Joey Calabretti (Seton Hall) and Tyler Jones (George Washington) followed up with an RBI single to center field and an RBI ground out, respectively.
RBI hits by Sutera and Edwin Sanchez (Siena) brought the lead to five after five innings.
Danny Perez (Stetson)scored on a passed ball in the seventh to cut the Mohawk Valley lead to four.
Sanchez put up another run in the eighth on a Calabretti double. That was all Aidan Colagrande (Stony Brook) would need to pick up a save, shutting the Mohawks (9-1) out in two innings of work to pick up the save.
Walter Garrett picked up the win for Mohawk Valley (4-4).
The Diamond Dawgs will continue their three-game home stand on Friday night when they host the Boonville Lumberjacks.
