LITTLE FALLS, NY – There’s no quit in the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs.

That was evident on Monday night when the Diamond Dawgs cut an eight-run lead in half in the ninth. Unfortunately, the rally fell just short, as they dropped their third straight, 9-5, to the Albany Baseball Club.

The game stayed scoreless until the fourth when Donovan Rhoden (Ballston Spa, NY/Herkimer) popped a sacrifice fly into deep center field to score Albany’s Ryan Ferremi (East Islip, NY/UAlbany). Matt Thorsen (Ghent, NY/Northeastern) plated the first run of the fifth for Albany, thanks to an RBI single by Kyle Brown (Scotia, NY/Felician).

An RBI double by Luke Fillippi (Port Jefferson, NY/UAlbany) brought home Brown, then Filippi extended the lead on a sacrifice ground out by Brooks Carter (Shallowater, TX/Abilene Christian). Pinch-hitter Jordan Daniels (Blacklick, OH/Ohio Dominian) came home and extended the lead on a passed ball.

Mohawk Valley began to claw back in the sixth, thanks to Diamond Dawg debutante Diego Tavarez (Spotswood, NJ/Wagner). His sacrifice fly to center cut the lead to four, scoring Brody Rasmussen (Boise, ID/Maine).

Three straight walks by Albany in the seventh scored Joey Slattery (Charlotte, NC/FAU) and extended the lead back to five.

The lead would balloon to seven in the eighth, thanks to RBI base hits by Daniels and Carter.

Mohawk Valley reeled in another run on a passed ball in the eighth, which would score Justin Hurd (Warwick, NY/UAlbany. An RBI single by Hurd in the ninth cut the lead to six, scoring Cristino Tufano (Babylon, NY/George Washington). A throwing error brought two more home, but that was as close as they would get, as Albany pitching set them down in order after that to put the game away.

John Gerfen (Brewster, NY/Cornell) got the win for Albany (3-0). Ripp Soto (San Marcos, TX/Western Texas College) was credited with the loss for Mohawk Valley (1-3).

Albany will be back in action on Wednesday, June 5, when they travel to Saugerties to take on the Stallions. Mohawk Valley will be on the road on Tuesday, June 5. to take on the Amsterdam Mohawks before an off-day on Wednesday.
