Donald “Baldy” J. Balderston

Donald “Baldy” J. Balderston, 68, of the Town of Ephratah, New York and formerly of Salisbury, New York, passed away unexpectedly and suddenly of natural causes to a peaceful beyond in the comfort of his home on Sunday, June 16, 2024.

He was born on August 19, 1955 in Little Falls, New York and was the son of the late George and Irene (Buccafurno) Balderston, Sr. Don was educated at Dolgeville Central School, and graduated with the Class of 1973.

Several years after graduation, Don (Baldy) went to work for the CSX Railroad System starting his career in 1976 in Batavia, New York which allowed him to travel throughout the railroad system and explore different parts of the Country. His main position was a Kershaw regulator operator. He made a significant impression on many coworkers & trainees in his time and was known across the board as a knowledgeable, hard worker. After 40+ years of dedicated service, he retired on April 1, 2017.

Don (Baldy) was a member of the Dolgeville Rod & Gun Club and the Salisbury Ridgerunners Snowmobile Club. He enjoyed old vehicles, a good tune, the outdoors, cutting firewood, hunting, fishing, riding his four-wheeler, working on his home and property, as well as being musically talented as a self-taught guitar and piano player who formerly played with the Curtis Road Blues Band. In his free time he made the rounds to keep in touch with his many friends and strived to entertain with stories, and kind greetings; he shared a smile that stemmed from his Irish eyes and an infectious laugh and will always be remembered for spearheading an acoustic sing-along during a past power outage at his favorite local bar. Baldy was a friendly face to many and his comments (all from the heart in his special, witty way) won many a laugh and a lasting memory. His true friends who knew him best were not just his friends, but his family. He will be sorely missed by his family, his friends and all of the people who enjoyed his company. He was loving and true to the end.
