You wouldn’t really know it, but there is a lot more going on at the Ace Hardware building on 441 W Main Street than you might think.
The second floor of the building is home to the Fitness Farmacy and owner Krista Kozma was a physical education teacher at Herkimer High School when she came up with the idea.
“I did the teaching job for about 10 years and I was the last person on the totem pole – a part time position. I kind of built this place in my head and that last year I thought – why not give it a try?” said Kozma.
She first started Fitness Farmacy in New Hartford and spent a year at that location. “It was too far from where I lived and too expensive,” stated Kozma.
She’s been in the Little Falls location for about 3 1/2 years. Kozma said “when we found this space, the price was completely different from New Hartford.”
Her goal is to create a space for families. The kids fitness program, full gym, group fitness classes, meetings about nutritional needs, massage therapy and healthy snacks round out the offerings at the business.
“It’s the one-stop wellness shop,” says Kozma. “I feel like I have the components that I want and I just want to make sure that they are the best.”
Kozma says “Little Falls has really been good to us. We’ve got a lot of families that are bringing their kids here and now they are asking about working out, getting healthy and wives and husbands that do memberships, so it’s good.”
Kozma wants people to think of her business as a wellness one. “You work out in the gym, belong to a group fitness class, and then eat well nutritionally and then recover,” she says.
The kids part of it stems from the fact that she has children herself. “It’s a great place for them to have fun and get moving. Obesity is a huge problem and being a physical education teacher, I’m aware of this, so it’s a great outlet for them,” said Kozma.
There are 8 instructors that are involved in the classes and the facility is about 8,000 square feet in size.
Kozma says “Its got to be a space for myself, my husband, my kids and dog. Our goal is to be a facility for the community. Our instructors are all invested in that vision and that makes a huge difference in someones business and it shows.”
“I really like Little Falls, and I didn’t realize that until I got here – it’s a pretty neat place. You are never bored and there is always something to do,” said Kozma.
Fitness Farmacy opens at 5 am and closes at 8 pm Monday through Friday. Saturdays and Sundays have limited hours, but they are open 7 days a week. You can find out more about them by visiting their Facebook page or calling 315-985-5691.
