The yearly flag burning ceremony held on Wednesday night had much cooler weather than normal for the flames coming out of the three barrels used to retire unserviceable American flags.

Pete Atutis with the American Legion Post 46 stated, “Tonight was our annual flag disposal ceremony. We do it every year, but couldn’t do it on Flag Day which is when most posts do it because the scouts were tied up with the Elks. We have a ten-minute ceremony to ensure that they are disposed of properly.”

He said that instead, they picked the closest Wednesday to that day to get the Girl and Boy Scouts out. “They are the ones that put out almost 3,000 flags in all of the cemeteries.”

Atutis said that the scouts do a fantastic job.
