Vietnam combat medic SSgt. Ron Schoonmaker (Ret) of Ilion isn’t known as “The Flag Man” for nothing. For years he has been responsible for organizing an effort to have new flags placed before veterans’ graves in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Herkimer.

Recently, Ron took it upon himself to have the flag pole near the veterans’ section of Cavalry Cemetery, also in Herkimer, fixed.

Repairs included a new pulley system, rope, and flag. He wanted to thank St. Francis DeSales Church for supporting the effort and the following for donations: Herkimer American Legion, Mohawk Legion, Ilion Legion, Ilion/Frankfort VFW, Greater Herkimer Lions Club, Hunger Coalition and Enea Family Funeral Homes.

Ron stated, “Thanks to everyone for their support. Without you, the project wouldn’t have been completed before Veterans Day. It truly does take a village.”

Hunger Coalition founder RJ Lenarcic added, “Ron’s a great example of a man whose service to his country did not end with his return home from Southeast Asia; he exemplifies the meaning of true patriot.”
