Florence Cummins

HERKIMER – Florence Cummins, 95 years old, passed away, on May 18, 2024, at Little Falls Hospital, with her family by her side.

Florence was born on July 12, 1928, in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of Minnie and Morris Polansky.  She was united in marriage to Elliott Cummins, on March 19, 1955.  Elliott passed away on December 1, 2016.

Florence graduated from Patterson Park High School, in 1946 and received her Associate’s Degree from Herkimer Community College in Early Childhood Education at the age of 74, making the Dean’s list every semester.  After high school, she worked for the Air Force. Florence was employed by the Herkimer Library Bureau and Standard Furniture Company before accepting a position at Mohawk Data Sciences, where she worked at each of their four locations in Herkimer.  Florence also served for several years on the board of the Herkimer library. She finished working just in time to enjoy retirement with Elliott, which included yearly trips to Florida, where she loved living on the beach.

Surviving Florence are: her son, Harry Cummins and daughter-in-law, Robi Gluck, of Princeton, NJ and daughter-in-law, Carol Alter, of Austin, TX; her son, Arnold Cummins and daughter-in-law, Karen, of Darien, CT; her daughter, Sharon Cummins, of Herkimer, NY; her grandchildren, (the jewels in her crown), Aleta and Zach Duff, Hannah and Danny Kelly, Eva Doty, Cecelia Cummins, Arthur Cummins, Bea Cummins, Sam Cummins and Emily Shearon, Emma Cummins and Jonathon Abramson; her great-grandchildren, MacKenzie Duff and Eric Duff; her nieces, Roslyn Preston and husband, Mark, Gloria Jacobson and husband, Wayne; along with several great-nieces; and her wonderful caregiver and close friend, Laurel Kerber.

She was preceded in death by: her sister/best friend, Ann Moskowitz and her husband, Harry; her brother, Aaron; her sister and brother-in-law, Harriet and Meyer Friedman; and her nephew, Lawrence Friedman.

Florence and Elliott were married for 61 years and were the loves of each other’s lives.  They danced in the living room together, laughed constantly, argued sometimes and were happiest when surrounded by their children and grandchildren.

Since 1958, Florence’s Temple Beth Joseph was her second home and her second family.  She cherished her TBJ community and served as President of both the Temple Sisterhood and the National Council of Jewish Women, as well as on countless other committees. For several years, Florence was in charge of the annual Christmas Dinner, at the Methodist Church.  She never missed a Friday evening service and so looked forward to her twice a week Hebrew classes with her buddies, Suzanne and Judy.
Florence was ahead of her time in so many ways.  She wouldn’t stand for injustice and was a fierce defender of anyone treated unfairly.  If she loved you, she was your best friend and loyal to the end.  She always had an endless supply of lemon bars, Bubbie muffins and brownies, that she would either hand deliver to new neighbors or send in the mail to her grandchildren.

Florence loved: her piano, baking, Rosamund Pilcher novels, crossword puzzles, Jeopardy, learning new skills, long walks in her neighborhood, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Clark Gable, Morning Joe, Rachel Maddow, Ari Melber, Ventura’s, shrimp scampi, voting, tai chi, meeting and greeting new neighbors and being a friend.  Most of all, she loved visits and calls from her grandchildren, Marsha, Rick and everyone from Temple Beth Joseph, and Sir Mario.

The family extends their sincere gratitude for the compassionate care of their mother to MOVAC, Bassett, Little Falls Hospital, Herkimer Police Department and the Herkimer Fire Department.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at Temple Beth Joseph, at 327 North Prospect Street, in Herkimer. Interment will follow, at Oak Hill Cemetery, in Herkimer.
