There are many forms of fraud that are specifically designed to target senior citizens. One specific type of fraud is home repair or contractor fraud. One example of home repair/contractor fraud would be contractors requesting that payment be made up front and then not completing the work that has been paid for.

Here are some tips to avoid home repair/contractor scams:

  1. Be an informed consumer. Take the time to research contractors before making a purchase. Take a trusted friend or family member with you who may offer some perspective to help you make difficult decisions.
  2. Be sure to carefully read all contracts and agreements before signing and make certain that all of your requirements have been put in writing.
  3. Make sure you understand all contract cancellation and refund terms.
  4. Do not allow anyone to pressure you into making purchases, signing contracts, or committing funds. These decisions are yours and yours alone.
