On Sunday, April 14, 2024, at 4:34 am, the City of Little Falls Fire Department received a call for a fire with an explosion at 74 Moreland Street in the City.

Upon arrival there was fire coming out of the second-floor windows on the front of the house.

A second alarm was sent, bringing Herkimer Fire, Ilion Fire, and MOVAC to the scene, along with backfilling the station with Salisbury Fire Department volunteers.

After the fire was extinguished, the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control was brought in to investigate. During the investigation, they located a situation that appeared to be hazardous materials in an unknown state.

New York State Hazmat Teams were summoned for inspection, information, and advice, and ultimately for removal and destruction. Once the fire scene was determined to be safe, the Fire Investigators continued their investigation.

There was one minor injured during the evacuation. A young female was transported to the Little Falls Hospital, where she was treated and released the same day.

No other injuries were reported or found from this incident, and no other buildings were damaged during the time of the fire. The majority of damage was found upstairs in the single-family residence, and at this time, the ignition source is being investigated.

The investigation is continuing, and results are pending at a future date.
