Joan M. Murphy

LITTLE FALLS – Miss Joan M. Murphy, 91, passed away peacefully, on May 24, 2024, with the loving support of her beloved family.

Joan was born the first of three daughters, on July 10, 1932, in Little Falls, New York. She was the daughter of the late J. Francis and Ada (Sellman) Murphy. She resided her entire life at the family homestead on Loomis Street, in Little Falls. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy with the Class of 1950. After High School, Joan became enamored with knitting and is widely known for her knitting skills and the yarn shops which she opened in her home and later on Main Street. She also worked at The Knit Nook in Utica for a short time. Yarnland was a haven for knitters in the city and surrounding towns for expert advice and supplies. Joan also greeted and served the public as a clerk at the Rite-Aid and CVS Pharmacies, in Little Falls.

In her retirement years Joan knited for New York City top designer Melissa Leapman. Ms. Leapman has written several designer books, one of which was dedicated to Joan, who was described as “knitter extraordinaire.” Joan’s handiwork is displayed in many of Melissa Leapman’s books.

Surviving are her beloved family: her sister, Eileen and husband, William Bennett, of Little Falls; her niece, Susan and husband, Gary Grabinski, of Little Falls, NY; her nephew, Marc and wife, Michelle Billings, of Surprise, AZ; her treasured great nephews and neices, Gary Fay, Carli, Kaytee and Cody Grabinski; along with many close cousins, including Clare Ryan, of Utica, Mary Crawford, of Glenville and Jane Pinto, of Pennsylvania.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, J. Francis and Ada (Sellman) Murphy; her sister, Ann M.; and brother-in-law, Fay Billings.

Joan loved to remember the children at the Shriner’s Hospital. She lovingly knit many blankets for them through the years. In lieu of flowers, it is with this very special memory in mind that we ask that memorial contributions in her honor be considered to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, Florida 33607. www.donate.lovetotherescue.org, or to St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, 7 Timmerman Avenue, St.Johnsville, New York 13452.
