The Little Falls Public Library is pleased to announce the upcoming raffle of a one-of-a-kind shoulder bag, created by a local artist with a rich local history attached to the materials used. With a drop-length of thirteen inches on the shoulder strap and fourteen inches by twelve inches on the bag, this unique piece could serve either as a striking display piece, an example of local craftsmanship and local history, or just a lovely way to bring your books to and from the Little Falls Public Library! Beginning Friday, May 27th, you will be able to purchase raffle tickets with the proceeds to benefit the Little Falls Public Library from the library’s front information desk, one ticket for three dollars or three tickets for five dollars, concluding with the prize drawing on Friday, June 24th. You need not be present on June 24th to win. The roomy and colorful piece, with its mint green shoulder strap, blue and dark green front panel, and gray interior reverse panel will be on display while tickets are on sale, near the library’s front information desk.
The shoulder bag was hand-crocheted out of scrap materials, including many fibers salvaged from Utica’s former textile mills. The maker’s grandparents worked in these factories in the 1950s and 1960s, after immigrating to the United States from Poland following World War 2. During their employment, they noticed that the mills discarded perfectly usable spools of thread and cord. They salvaged some of these materials and put them to good uses in their home – by tying back bushes and vines in their garden or crocheting small rugs. Just as those mills were renowned for making durable textiles, the products made with the salvaged remnant fibers also proved to be long-lasting. The maker, local artisan, and arts-and-crafts instructor John Ossowski hopes that whoever becomes the owner of this fine shoulder bag will find it to be very durable and enjoy its usefulness for a long time to come!
