LITTLE FALLS, NY – The 38th Annual Canal Celebration in Little Falls continued to dazzle on Friday, August 8, with perfect weather setting the stage for a spectacular parade that had the community buzzing with excitement.
The hour-long procession down Main Street was a vibrant showcase of local pride, drawing families, locals, and visitors to celebrate the city’s rich heritage along the Erie Canal.
The parade, a highlight of the day, featured an impressive lineup of fire trucks, police officers, American Legion marchers, and dignitaries, including Assemblyman Smullen. Floats burst with creativity, and candy rained down, turning the streets into a treasure hunt for delighted children.
Mayor Deborah Kaufman, who served as Grand Marshal, captured the spirit of the event: “This year’s parade was really exceptional. It had everything you’d ever want in a parade: fire trucks, policemen, the American Legion marching, dignitaries, including Assemblyman Smullen, an hour-long display of amazing floats, and lots and lots of candy. The kids were grabbing it up like it was a treasure hunt. People were remarking as I walked down the street, how this was the best parade in years. Pat Stock and her amazing volunteers did an incredible job this year!”
Friday’s festivities didn’t stop at the parade. Nearly 70 vendors lined Eastern Park from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., offering everything from crafts to a new kettle corn stand that had attendees lining up for a taste. The energy carried into the evening with a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Main Street, where local athletes showcased their skills under the summer sky.
Music filled the air with performances from bands like the Little Falls High School marching band and the whimsical Shriners’ clown cars, adding a playful touch.
But the celebration is far from over, and the weekend promises even more excitement! On Saturday, August 9, get ready for a jam-packed day starting bright and early with Sheriff Chris Farber’s Youth Race at 8:45 a.m., followed by the Little Falls Lumber Freedom Run 5K at 9 a.m. in Eastern Park (note: the course has been adjusted for ongoing roadwork).
Fitness enthusiasts can cheer on competitors of all ages at the Youth and Family Center weightlifting competition, where even septuagenarians flex their strength. A new rock climbing wall in Eastern Park, inspired by local spots like Moss Island, will challenge thrill-seekers, while city-wide garage sales from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. invite treasure hunters to scour Little Falls for unique finds.
Music lovers can groove to the Chicks Along the Canal lineup in Sterzinar Park, featuring Opus Black Trio, Ari Mariucci, and Megan Hartman from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Dr. Tony Piana Annual Rotary Golf Tournament at MV Golf & Event Center adds a competitive edge for golfers.
On Sunday, August 10, the celebration wraps up with a splash—literally! The wildly popular Foam Fest kicks off at noon with extra foam cannons for maximum sudsy fun, perfect for kids and parents alike. Cyclists can join the non-competitive Canal Trail Bike Ride from the General Herkimer Home to Lock 16 along the Empire State Trail, earning a pint glass redeemable for a free draft at spots like Lock 17.
Anglers can cast their lines in youth and adult fishing derbies. At the same time, cultural explorers enjoy the Zoo Mobile, stained glass tours at Holy Family Parish, library tours, and Operation Safe Child badges. Music continues to flow with acts like The Ultimates, Critical Path, Monkey and the Crowbar, and Helen’s Dixielanders.
Car enthusiasts will love the 38th Annual Classic & Antique Car Show at Burke Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring a range of vehicles from pre-1939 models to modern sports cars, with awards for Best of Show and People’s Choice.
