Local Girl Scout Troop 260 held their Annual Powder Puff Derby on Saturday in the Holy Family Parish gym with an Easter/Spring design on the entries.
Unit Leader Holly Pelzer stated, “We made it into a bigger event because we found that the girls just coming and doing the derby was kind of boring. So we have council here, a camp table from one of our camp directors, a fund-raiser, and crafts, so the girls have something else to do.”
She went on to say that they are very happy to have it in person this year. “It’s one of our bigger events, so the girls love to get together… it’s been two years since we’ve been in person for this.”
There are seven troops in Little Falls, and they all participated in the derby.
Pelzer says that while Girls Scouts have changed somewhat over the years, they are now getting back to some of the basics. “We’re getting back outdoors, there are STEM projects and Robotics as well. We’ve got a lot of new areas, as well as our original badges.”
More than fifty girls participate in Girl Scouts in Little Falls, from K-12. When asked why a girl would consider joining, she said, “I think it brings a sense of self. We are here to empower the girls to know that girls can do anything.”
“I think that working with the community helps the girls with their confidence and it keeps building as they go. We just like girls knowing that they can do anything and find their own voice,” she stated.
The girls also collected items for the local Pause 4 All Paws animal rescue.
