New Hartford Police Department
**Press Release Update**
On November 30th at approximately 10:00 pm, The Oneida County 911 Center received a 911 call from a passerby traveling on Elm St. in The Town of New Hartford that there was an injured female laying in the roadway on Elm St. in the vicinity of Brooks Lane.
The New Hartford Police Department along with The Willowvale Fire Department and Edwards Ambulance were dispatched to the area to locate the female. Unfortunately, the female, who was later identified as 30-year-old Martha Staring, died from her injuries.
Investigators with The New Hartford Police Department, with the assistance of The Oneida County District Attorney’s Office, continued to investigate since November of 2022. On May 11th, 2023, Alexander Chlus, age 30 of Sauquoit, was indicted by an Oneida County Grand Jury on one count of Leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, where Staring succumbed to her injuries. This charge is a class D Felony.
Chlus surrendered himself to Oneida County Court today on these charges and was arraigned. Chlus was released on his own recognizance after the arraignment, pending future court proceedings.
