Grave robbing, arsonists, and forgotten murders are a few of the assorted felonies you can read about in the new book ‘WICKED HERKIMER COUNTY” coming out on September 25, published by The History Press, edited by Caryl Hopson and Susan Perkins, and written by area contributing authors. The new book is sponsored by “Friends of Historic Herkimer County,” a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and helping maintain historic sites in Herkimer County. Their main project for the past 17 years has been restoring the 1834 Herkimer County Jail in Herkimer. This book is a fundraiser to help raise additional needed funds beyond a New York State grant the group received for a major renovation project to stabilize the structure and improve environmental conditions at the historic Jail.

This collection of 27 stories includes lantern carrying and shovel wielding men who desecrated graves in the dark of night. In addition to burglaries, bank and train robbers and several arsons, and a gun battle at a summer camp in Old Forge, there were a few incidents that took townspeople by complete surprise. For instance, one man dispensed his own justice by publicly horsewhipping another man in public who paid too much attention to his wife, while there was another man who shocked everyone by saying “I Do” more times than Henry VIII!

A special premier Booksigning event will take place Saturday, September 25 from 10 a.m.-Noon on the front lawn of the 1834 Jail, located at 327 N. Main Street, Herkimer, NY with many of the contributing authors in attendance. The authors include Diane Fagan Affleck, Shayla Clark, Barbara Dundee, James Greiner, Angela Harris, Caryl, and James Hopson, Deborah Huxtable Kidder, David Krutz, Gregg Lawrence, Patrick Luppino, Peg Masters, Susan Perkins, “Det Smada,” Jeffrey Steele, Patricia Masi Stock, David Waite, Roberta Walsh, and Dennis Webster. In case of rain, an alternative location for the book signing will be at the Mohawk Valley Community Market (the old Munger’s building), 142 N. Main St., Herkimer.

The cost of the book is $22.00 and can be purchased at the Booksigning or ordered by mail. Please send a check to the Friends of Historic Herkimer County, P.O. Box 703, Herkimer, NY 13350, and add $5.00 for postage. For more information, call 315-867-5036 or email Keep up to date on the Friend’s activities by liking their Facebook page.
