As New York State’s new mask mandate is unfolding, Herkimer County will continue its effort to educate people on the importance
As far as mandated enforcement by the State through county health departments, we find it very difficult to implement this now or any other time due to the lack of sufficient personnel. Herkimer County’s small, but very dedicated, Public Health Department has been inundated from the beginning of this pandemic and to place the duties of enforcement on an already taxed department would not bode well for our employees or the public we serve. Not to mention keeping the efficiencies of running many day to day programs, clinics and services the public expects as taxpayers. Add COVID response duties to the mix and enforcement capabilities would and will not be possible. As this is being mandated by the State, it should fall upon them to enforce it.
Our primary efforts will be getting people educated, tested and vaccinated, along with keeping our children in school. We encourage our businesses to use common sense and best practices when implementing policies particular to their own businesses. As the holiday season is upon us, we ask that families do what they feel is best for them while considering safe measures in protecting loved ones at this joyous time of year.
