By all accounts, it’s one of those games that gave just about every Mountie fan a heart attack, as the team pulled off a 20-19 win over defending Section III Class C champion Holland Patent, who stepped onto the field with a three-game winning streak.
It was quarterback Will Richard’s first start as Mounties quarterback, and the team needed a win to contend for a postseason wildcard spot. Richardson not only handled the job but made the game-winning touchdown.
Holland Patent had a chance to go ahead in the final seconds of the game, but the Mountie defense held tough and stopped them on the one-yard line as time ran out.
Coach Bryan Shepardson said, “I’m just so proud of my kids…to play all 48 minutes. It took all of the 48. We’ve had some great games over the years, but Holland Patent is another great ball club and it came right down to the end. For those seniors, that memory…it’s just a great day and I’m so proud of them.”
“It’s a great group of kids to have that moving forward, I think is really going to be big for the program,” said the Coach.
Little Falls is 4-3 on the season and 2-2 in their division. Section III seeding should be announced today.
The team had a message for their coaches, family, and fans and it reads as follows:
It’s hard to believe that our final season of football is almost over. We are here nonetheless and we couldn’t have gotten here without the help of several people. First of all, we would like to thank all of the previous coaches we’ve had. Without you, we wouldn’t even be close to the players we are today. Coach Liscio, Coach Richardson, and all of our other Pop Warner coaches taught us the fundamentals we needed to succeed and our Modified Coaches, Coach G, and Coach Regan, really helped us develop those skills.
We also want to thank the community, our peers, our fans, and everyone else who comes out to the games to support us. It’s always a great feeling as a player to know that you have people who come to cheer for you and to have a crowd to play for.
We would also like to show our appreciation to the cheerleaders for always coming to support us and for helping to put on a wonderful homecoming.
We really would like to thank all of our current coaches as well. Coach Casulo, Coach Roger, Coach Reid, and Coach Shep, you have all done so much for us these past couple of years. You guys have worked so hard and given up so much of your time to make us better football players and we truly appreciate that. More importantly than that, you have helped us grow closer as a team and as a family, and helped to shape us into better people along the way. We wouldn’t be close to the kind of football players or people that we are today without all of your support.
Lastly, we would like to thank all of our families for all they have done for us. You have been supporting us from the beginning and haven’t stopped since. From driving us to practices and coming to our games to always encourage us on and off the field, you have always been our number one fans and we are all so thankful for that.
To all the underclassmen, we wish you good luck with your future seasons. Keep working hard and remember what this program stands for and you guys will have all the success you can dream of.
Thank you, everyone, for coming out today to support Little Falls Football.
