The first of twelve Riggie Wars was a huge success last Saturday as more than 1,000 people showed up at Rock Valley Brewing Company in Canal Place, for an event put together by the 315 Foodies.
This was the first competition of a series, that will be held throughout the 315 area code and broken up into divisions. Multiple winners from each division will face off in the Riggie Wars World Championships to be held in the birthplace of Chicken Riggies, Utica, NY.
Competitors entered their best riggies, which is traditionally a chicken & rigatoni dish, and they were judged by samplers and guest judges. Cassidy’s Diner of Richfield Springs was the winner of the event and Preston Moore, one of the founders of 315 Foodies said, “It was a really tight competition, with the difference between 1st and 2nd being less than 20 votes.”
The diner is located at 128 Main St in Richfield Springs and is a family-friendly diner, serving “good food, coffee, breakfast, and lunch.”
They posted on their Facebook page and said, “We did it! #1 in Riggie Wars 1 out of 16 other Restaurants! With a bit of confusion until they figured out where the mistake was made, but so glad they looked into this and figured it out. A special thanks to the man behind the recipe, my husband Tim Winslow you nailed it! Congratulations to everyone who participated!”
More said, “It was such a great day. To measure success, we were looking at how many people would come. There were 1,000+ people, in the second smallest City in New York, at a little brewery. That’s a success to me.”
Mike George, owner of Rock Valley Brewing Company and host of the event stated, “We had an incredible turnout. This community never ceases to amaze me with how generous it is, how giving it is, and how wonderful it is. My staff has been absolutely phenomenal. They make my life easy, they really do.”
