Maynard said that 47 years ago, the mayor appointed a committee of four people to solicit civic fraternal and industrial organizations to come up with a plan to build the field. Niagra Mohawk donated time to put up the lights and the fill was donated for the field.
According to Blask it was a good community effort. “It wasn’t a question of having money – it was a matter of getting what you could and scavenging around” he said.
“And the field itself – they didn’t plant grass – the turf was brought in from Batavia turf farms and laid in just like a major league field and it’s still there today because of the way it’s been maintained for 47 years” Blask stated. “It’s still a quality field.”
