LITTLE FALLS, NY – Round two goes to the Blue Sox.

A six-run inning powered the Utica Blue Sox to their first win of the season on Saturday night, as they knocked off the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs, 8-3.

A pair of home runs for the Blue Sox put them up 6-0 after just one-half an inning. A three-run shot by Max French (Grand Ridge, MI/Hillsdale) and a two-run no-doubt home run to left by Trace Hartman (Baltimore, OH/Charleston) chased Diamond Dawgs starter Austin Barnao (Ticonderoga, NY/Lynn) early.

In the third, Mohawk Valley began to chip away at the lead, thanks to an RBI double by Bryce Phelps (Denver, IA/Wagner). The lead dropped to four on a long home run to left field by Justin Hurd (Warwick, NY/SUNY Albany).

The Blue Sox added another in the fifth on an RBI single by Nick O’Connor (Wantagh, NY/Millersville) that scored Norris McClure (Mandeville, LA/Spring Hill) from third base. They extended the lead in the very next inning when Gabe Cavazzoni (Wall, NJ/Seton Hall) scored an RBI single.

Cristino Trufano (Babylon, NY/George Washington) picked up an RBI single in the eighth, but that was as close as the Diamond Dawgs would get, as Kris Giangreco (Delran, NJ/Mount St. Mary’s) got out of a bases-loaded jam to end the game.

Ryan King (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Grand Valley State) was the winning pitcher for Utica (1-1). Barnao got the loss for Mohawk Valley (1-1).

Utica has a day off on Sunday before heading to Boonville to take on the Lumberjacks. Mohawk Valley will be on the road on Sunday as they take on the Watertown Rapids. They will be back on Monday, June 3, to host the Albany Baseball Club.
