Friday night’s ribbon-cutting ceremony at Skobby’s Pizza celebrated so much more than just the opening of a new business at 612 East Main Street. It honored family, friendships, and traditions. Rich Marocco, the former owner of Marocco’s Pizza that operated at this very location, was present. Alex Lawrence, owner of Skobby’s Pizza, and Rich have been friends for a long time and they both acknowledge that Rich provided pointers, guidance, and support as Alex launched his new business. The scissors used in the ribbon-cutting belonged to Rich’s dad, Firminio Marocco, and were used years ago at this same location within Marocco’s Tailor Shop.

The ties from Marocco’s to Skobby’s are also apparent among the employees. Alex, along with current Skobby employees Tara Arduini and Andrea Marocco, also worked at Marocco’s Pizza. Andrea, worked many an evening at her dad’s pizza place, while Alex and Tara helped manage. It seems that Alex and Tara are putting the culinary skills learned at BOCES to good use. In addition, Rich tells me to expect to see him at Skobby’s in the future for what he calls “Celebrity” nights.

Why Skobby’s Pizza? Scobby was the nickname of Alex’s dad, Mark Lawrence, and it is Mark’s picture that adorns the menus and the banner. Alex’s Uncle Joe Lawrence, “Adirondack Joe”, has also been instrumental; guiding Alex’s hand since he opened the doors, inspiring the menu, and mentoring Alex in the kitchen. And Alex says “none of this would be possible without the help and daily support of my wife, Angela, and our four children”.

Alex is grateful for this community he grew up in and glad to play his part and give back in any way he can. I encourage you to stop in to welcome Alex to Main Street and while there, I suggest you try the General TSO’s Sweet Italian Wings…spicy, sweet, plump, and yummy! As Alex puts it: “Skobby’s; named after a great man, made for a great community! “

You won’t be disappointed.
