Today is International Beaver Day in honor of Dorothy Richards, who had the sanctuary Beaversprite in Oppenheim. She and her husband were originally from Little Falls.

Who would have thought what she created would be the start of an international movement?

Her friends Owen and Sharon Brown started Friends of Beaversprite, which turned into Beavers, Wetlands & Wildlife. They have their own sanctuary in Oppenheim with a pond named Twilight Pond, and their own beavers come to the shore to greet them.

Caryl Hopson stated, “I am the Secretary of the group and have known them for many years. I was lucky enough to “take care” of the pond creatures, which included beavers, geese, ducks, deer, muskrats, etc., one week when they were on vacation. It was amazing!”
