The fourth annual Tom Bergen Memorial Autism Awareness Bowling Tournament took place on Saturday, February 22nd and Sunday, February 23rd at RD’s Gorge View Lanes, and by any measure, it was once again a success.
Guardianship and Spirituality Coordinator at Arc Herkimer, Tammy Helmer-Bergen said, “This tournament is in honor of my son Tom. He had Autism and passed away suddenly in 2016. We do this to remember him because he loved bowling, was an advocate for Autism Awareness and was a dedicated volunteer at Arc Herkimer for over 16 years.”
“The paint party was new this year and the boy scouts were here selling candy bars. Tom was a Boy Scout, Eagle Scout and assistant scoutmaster for that troop,” she said.
More than 120 bowlers participated in the tournament over the two day period.
Helmer-Bergen said, “people are very generous, always.”
All proceeds from the event benefit Arc Herkimer’s Autism Program, which provides several workshops, opportunities, and resources each year for people with Autism.
