On July 26, 2020, at 8:55 p.m., State Police in Herkimer responded to a UTV crash that occurred State Route 170 at the intersection of Yellow Church Road in the town of Little Falls, Herkimer County.

Initial investigation has determined a UTV, operated by Jason C. Sullivan, age 33 from Little Falls, NY was traveling west on Yellow Church Road when he failed to stop for a stop sign and proceeded into the intersection striking a 2009 Ford van that was traveling south on State Route 170. Sullivan and a passenger, Matthew A. Cotton, age 37 from Herkimer, NY were both ejected from the UTV and transported with critical injuries. The operator of the Ford Van, Alexander M. Stone, age 23 from Littler Falls, NY was not injured in the crash.

Jason C. Sullivan was transported to Little Falls Hospital and was pronounced deceased.

Matthew A. Cotton was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and was pronounced deceased.

The investigation is continuing.

Utility Terrain Vehicles, or UTVs, are built and used more for work than recreation. They are large, powerful, able to seat passengers side by side, and built with lots of storage space. They’re commonly used to haul equipment and supplies in locations that make using a truck impractical or impossible.
