Utica Zoo Announces a New Addition: A Baby Donkey

The Utica Zoo is thrilled to announce the arrival of a new female baby donkey! This adorable addition was born healthy and strong to proud mother Hazel, who joined the Utica Zoo with her first foal, Nutmeg, last spring. Hazel was already pregnant was she arrived to the Zoo. This marks an exciting milestone for the Zoo and provides a wonderful opportunity for guests to learn more about these charming and intelligent animals.

Donkey gestation typically lasts about 11 to 14 months, or approximately 365 days. Throughout her pregnancy, Hazel received exceptional care from the Zoo’s dedicated animal care team, ensuring her comfort and health every step of the way. Her successful delivery is a testament to the team’s expertise and commitment to animal welfare.

The new foal was named Picabo (pronounced Peek-a-boo) by sponsor Tom Gilroy after Picabo Street, former World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medalist. In their early weeks, donkey foals stay very close to their mothers, relying on them for nourishment, protection, and learning vital behaviors. Picabo and Hazel will remain on exhibit however, the new foal and mom may have limited daily access (weather permitting) to guest viewing areas of their exhibit through the weekend. Nutmeg, Hazel’s previous foal, will remain on exhibit with full access.

“We’re overjoyed to welcome this new baby to our Zoo,” said Andria Heath, Executive Director of the Utica Zoo. “Hazel has been an exceptional mother, and it’s heartwarming to see how well the foal is thriving. We’re excited to share this moment with our community and invite everyone to come meet the newest member of our animal family who is currently on exhibit.”
