Two Little Falls Weblo Scouts have won the Dr. Luis Walter Alvarez Boy Scouts of America Supernova award. This is the highest level science award they could receive for their age group within Cub Scouts, and they are the only two to win the award in this scouting district.
A special dinner honoring the two scouts was held at the Elks Lodge on Wednesday night, and according to Scout leader Keith Knight, “This is the highest science award that a Scout can earn depending on their age group. So tonight, we have an award ceremony for the other scouts who have earned science awards in our pack, but a special ceremony for these two so they can get the recognition they deserve.”
He said that these are the first two children in the district to ever receive the award.
“They all start by winning different above and beyond science awards. Things about motion, chemistry, and things that go above and beyond what is normally done in their ranks. They have to do three of those before they get a chance to go to do this one,” said Knight.
There is a lot of study, research, and presentations to teachers involving the science that the scouts were working on. “These kids started it virtually at the beginning of the pandemic. That’s how long they’ve been working on it,” he said.
“We’ve been waiting to meet again in person so we could actually do this ceremony. It’s actually awesome. It’s not something we have seen locally,” stated Knight.
