The Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts is honored to present the opening of “Women Paint Women” on March 2, 2024. Six artists in the Mohawk Valley have identified women whose contributions have been inroads in our area over the years.

In 2020, a group of artists conceived the project. The group had won a commission from The Women’s Fund of Oneida and Herkimer Counties to portray Women’s Rights activists in the United States from 1848 to 1920, the passing of the Nineteenth Amendment.

The MVCA Women Paint Women exhibition is a “hall of fame of notable women whose contributions inspired the artists to paint their portraits.” (Carol Gordon Wood.) The result is a fascinating group of women from different professions in our communities over the years. Each of the artists chose their subjects. Each subject is extraordinary!

Our Artists are:

Sally Casler, Montana Fletcher, Virginia Keith,
Yulia Levkovich, Maggie Peterson, Teresa Van Etten.

The artists include a biographical statement explaining why the subjects were an inspiration to them and how the artist developed the relationships. Also, how the relationships changed as the artist saw more in the life of her subjects. As their time and history combined, the artist’s relationships became more personal and intimate. Each portrait is a connection that transcends the moment when the artist realizes the gift she is being given.

Just being able to view the many portraits, you, too, will feel the energy and commitment of these women who have served our communities for many years. Their lives reflect the art of the women who painted them.

WOMEN PAINT WOMEN will open on March 2, 2024, at the Mohawk Center for the Arts.
