COVID has upset everything, including the Girl Scouts’ ability to have their yearly powder puff derby at the Holy Family Parish gym. However, they pressed on and figured out a way to hold the event virtually.
Holly Pelzer, organizer of the event said, “This year we decided to do a Christmas theme because we’ve been trying to do this since April. At first, we tried to do just groups, but obviously, that wasn’t going to work. As the girls are dropping off their cars, we’re assigning numbers and then we’re going to do the race on YouTube live.”
She said that they had 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for the girls who won. She said, “It’s kind of quiet this year.”
Pelzer said that the group has been doing ‘pretty good’. “We’ve done some virtual meetings and we’ve done some virtual events at the beginning of this, and then this summer, we were able to open up a bit and have some in-person gatherings.”
She said that the Girl Scouts were adapting and surviving. “Cookie season is going to be hard this year. It’s going to start on December 19th, which is early. I think the thought is that the kids can take them to their families and have plenty of time for pre-orders.”
The winners were 1st place, Kadence Roberts, 2nd place, Alexis Chrisman, 3rd place Makenzie Hargrave, and Most Unique, Savannah Synenki.
Pelzer said that they have to keep the program going because the girls love it. “We adapt where we can,” she stated.
