John Luciano, Executive Chef at the Canal Side Inn, Little Falls, New York, passed away sadly on the morning of Sunday, 23rd July 2023, leaving those that knew him devastated. An autopsy was performed in Albany, but no cause of death has been revealed at this time.
Born and raised in Boston, Chef John Luciano boasts an impressive culinary journey, having honed his skills in a diverse array of esteemed restaurants within the Boston Market. His formal training commenced at Newbury College, where he pursued studies in hotel/restaurant management and culinary arts, laying the foundation for his culinary passion. Taking a leap into the gastronomic world, Chef John joined the prestigious Aujourd’hui at the Four Seasons Hotel, kick-starting his culinary career.
Demonstrating his remarkable talent and dedication, he swiftly ascended the culinary ranks and secured the esteemed position of Sous Chef at the renowned Stephanie’s On Newberry, located on the iconic Newberry St. Driven by his culinary ambitions, Chef John ventured into the world of fine dining and served to help unveil the exquisitely crafted French restaurant, Mistral on Columbus Ave.
Chef John assumed his first Executive Chef role at Bella Luna, where he continued to delight diners with his exceptional culinary creations. However, in 2013, his path took an exciting turn as he, along with his wife, relocated to the Utica area to be closer to their extended family. During his time there, Chef John occupied several prominent positions, including notable stints at the Chowder House and ultimately culminating at the distinguished Teugega County Club.
Embracing the opportunity with enthusiasm, Chef John assumed the role of culinary maestro at the Canal Side Inn. Infused with his passion for culinary innovation and a respect for tradition, he meticulously curated a menu that retained the restaurant’s cherished ambiance and flavors while infusing it with his distinctive American twist on both contemporary and timeless dishes. Chef John’s presence was unmistakable, nor was his heart. He helped many during his time in Little Falls, preparing food for the homebound during holidays and personally delivering meals often to those in need.
He is survived by three brothers: Chris, Bill, and Robert, and his mother, Pam Luciano. He is also survived by a daughter Candice and granddaughter Alaina and many nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles, most all in the Boston area.
We thank all those who reached out with kind words and sentiments since John’s passing.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 5, 2023, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 950 East Street, Dedham, MA 02026. A local memorial service in Little Falls will be planned for a later date TBD.
For a season I got to be in Chef John’s life because he lived at Academy Apts. While not having an elevator available for a season, if John crossed my path hauling groceries to the 4th floor he would take all of them and carry them for me. I enjoyed the few times I was able to interact with him during roadside fixings on Canal Days events and out and about in the community of Little Falls as well. I was quite saddened to hear of his passing. I pray for comfort for his family at this time.
Had the pleasure of dining at the Canal Side Restaurant a few times earlier this summer. John was someone you would never forget. Full of life, talented chef, absolutely hysterical and sometimes over the top. Super welcoming, engaging and always “John.” I’ll be sad not to see him when I come home to visit. His shoes will not be filled easily. For his family, I’m sorry for your loss. 🥹🙏 God has plans for him.
I am so sad to hear of John’s passing. After my husband Brian died, John invited me to dine at the restaurant so I wouldn’t have to be alone on Thanksgiving. It was the kindest thing anyone in Little Falls ever did for me.
He was an asset to our community and will be missed.
I would like to extend my sincere condolences to John’s family and friends.
To Wanda, Michael, and Lisa,
Thank you for your kind words and sharing your memories of John. Our family is trying to heal from this unexpected passing of a great guy taken too soon. John loved his time in New York where he was able to hone his craft and become a positive and welcome part of his community. I am sure he has left many memories with those he touched. Again Thank you for taking a moment to share.
The Family of John Luciano
I am just now learning of the untimely death of Chef John Luciano of Canal Side Inn in Little Falls. My husband and I had the pleasure of knowing this kind and funny gentle giant and outstanding chef when we would dine at “the Inn” during the years he created his magic there. My heart will be heavy when we dine at “the Inn” the next time knowing he will not be there in person – but in spirit.
I, too, send my condolences to his family and the wait staff and employees of Canal Side Inn.
I didn’t know this good man but he and my uncle share the same name both first and last so he caught my attention. My belated condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace. 🙏🏻
